Imagine that you have a Linux server at work and you want to access it from home directly and run various commands and actions on it. Or you want to connect to a media device and modify its functionality and behavior, by typing a series of commands. To make all these possible, you could use the PuTTY application, a Windows program which allows you to connect to any device using the Telnet, Serial or SSH protocols.

The application does not need to be installed and it's enough to run the executable file downloaded from the producer's website. After launching the application, the user will just need to type the IP address or hostname of the computer he wants to connect to and then select the protocol that will be used. Optionally, one can go through the program's configuration options.

As such, PuTTY can create a log file, containing all the program's actions, including typed commands, possible error messages and so on. What's more, the appearance of the application can be customized, by changing the colors of the interface, the quality of the font and so on. There are also a couple of configuration options for each protocol, but some of them may not be understood by inexperienced computer users. This is why they should consult the online documentation, before making any changes in the program's configuration, as making the wrong settings may cause PuTTY to malfunction.

Pros

It allows you to connect to a series of protocols, like SSH, TELNET, RLOGIN and SERIAL. Besides that, there are a lot of configuration options for the program's functionality and appearance. Furthermore, the colors of the interface and quality of the font can be changed. What's more, there are options available for each protocol.

Cons

Beginners and inexperienced computer users may not be able to use the program at full scale, as some features are more advanced. PuTTY allows you to easily connect to a series of Internet protocols using an intuitive interface and a large number of features and options.
